CANCELED - Navigating Gender Norms with Dr. Dana Edell

Join Dana Edell, PhD as she presents TrueChild‘s work related to identifying and understanding gender norms, how they impact Jewish girls today and what we can do about it. This tailored presentation for Atlanta parents will offer guidance, conversation starters and strategies for engaging daughters in overcoming the specific challenges they face due to gender injustice.

TrueChild’s JET: Jewish Girls Empowered Together curriculum teach middle school girls to think critically about rigid gender norms, particularly in having more constructive ideas around female leadership, strength, and self-efficacy is supported by a grant from the Jewish Women’s Fund of Atlanta and a partnership with Jewish Family & Career Services.

About the Speaker

Dr. Dana Edell

Dana Edell, MFA, PhD, is an activist-scholar-artist-educator and co-director of SPARK Movement, an intergenerational, anti-racist, global girls’ activist organization where she trains and supports girls to take action in their communities, and consults with organizations throughout the United States and abroad about gender justice, youth engagement, feminist Jewish education and arts education. She has produced and directed more than 70 original plays and 7 albums of new music written and performed by girls about social justice issues. She has published 3 feminist/activist curricula and 8 arts-based resource guidebooks and has also taught theatre in public elementary, middle and high schools throughout New York City. Through her writing, presentations and media appearances, she advocates for feminist anti-racist girls’ activism, and the need for performing arts experiences for girls. Dana was co-chair of the Girls’ Participation Task Force at the United Nations, co-founder of viBe Theater Experience and she currently teaches Theatre & Activism and Applied Theatre at New York University and CUNY. Dana has a BA in Classics/Ancient Greek from Brown, an MFA in Theatre Directing from Columbia and a PhD in Education from NYU.

JumpSpark’s Navigating Parenthood is a series of workshops designed to equip parents for the milestones and challenges teens face today. Exploring topics on teen wellness, preparing for college, and more, Navigating Parenthood will connect parents with resources and agencies in Atlanta to help them prepare teens for life.

Through a partnership with Chabad Intown, we’ve expanded Intown to better serve the the Jewish families living inside the Atlanta perimeter.
